Michael Pettis phê phán chính sách hỗ trợ ngành công nghiệp electric cars của TQ. Pettis lập luận rất giống nhiều development economists phê phán industrial policies khi cho rằng chưa biết chính sách kinh tế có đúng hay không nhưng nếu nó được giao vào tay những incompetent businessmen (thường là cựu quan chức) và policymaker thì sẽ dễ thất bại. Một số ví dụ về industrial policies của VN: chính sách phát triển các nhà máy xi măng lò đứng, chương trình mía đường, công nghiệp đóng tầu, công nghiệp lắp ráp xe hơi.
